How the thinking evolved

1995→2002

From code to capital

Zip2 and X.com→PayPal yield the first fortune. The guiding question: what will most affect the future of humanity? The answer will build the rest of his life.

1999

Internet

The net as humanity's nervous system. X.com — the vision of an "everything app": payments, services, comms in one. Accelerate the flow of value.

„Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app.”
Elon Musk, 2022 · Musk, Twitter/X post, październik 2022 (Fortune, NBC News, CNBC)

2004

Energy

Tesla: prove electric beats combustion. The Master Plan, the gigafactory, "the machine that builds the machine". Getting off fossil fuels as a civilizational goal.

„We realized that the true problem, the true difficulty, and where the greatest potential is -- is building the machine that makes the machine.”
Elon Musk, 2016 · Musk, Tesla Annual Shareholders Meeting, czerwiec 2016 (Electrek)

2002

Mars

SpaceX: reusability cuts the cost of space by orders of magnitude. The goal — make humanity multiplanetary, a backup of consciousness beyond Earth.

„If you think about the future of humanity, it's going to fundamentally bifurcate in two directions, all life as we know it. Either it's going to become multiplanetary, or it's going to be confined to one planet, until some eventual extinction event.”
Elon Musk, 2013 · Musk, D11 Conference (All Things D), maj 2013 (CNBC/Quora)

2015

AI

From co-founding OpenAI out of existential worry, through Neuralink (symbiosis), to xAI/Grok and full autonomy — the most dangerous and most powerful lever.

„With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon. You know all those stories where there's the guy with the pentagram and the holy water and he's sure he can control the demon. It doesn't work out.”
Elon Musk, 2014 · Musk, MIT AeroAstro Centennial Symposium, 24.10.2014 (Washington Post, TechCrunch)

2026

The circle closes

First principles and vertical integration as the common engine of every bet. The overarching thesis: extend the light of consciousness — sustainable, multiplanetary, with AI under control.

Key concepts

Internet

Internet & Software

An existential bet on the internet as a force reshaping the flow of information and money. Zip2 and X.com/PayPal as the first instruments. The everything app vision dating back to 1999.

First Principles Thinking

A physics-based way of seeing the world: break things down to fundamental truths and build reasoning from the ground up. The opposite of reasoning by analogy.

Everything App (X.com)

A single application combining payments, banking, messaging, and e-commerce. The X.com vision from 1999 returned with the acquisition of Twitter as X in 2022.

Energy

Sustainable Energy

Accelerating the transition from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy to a solar-electric economy. Tesla, Gigafactory, and Powerwall as the tools of that mission.

Vertical Integration

Whoever controls the entire chain — raw materials, manufacturing, distribution — can iterate without negotiating with suppliers. The idiot index as a diagnostic tool.

The Machine That Builds the Machine

The factory as a product every bit as important as the product itself. Designing the production line is harder than designing the car or the rocket.

Idiot Index

The ratio of the cost of a finished component to the cost of its raw materials. A high index signals excessive complexity or an inefficient process. A tool that compels vertical integration.

Full Autonomy (FSD)

A car as a robot navigating a world designed for human eyes. Vision-only + a neural network + fleet data as the only path to full self-driving at scale.

Mars

Multiplanetary

A backup copy of consciousness and life beyond Earth. SpaceX, Falcon, and Starship as the tools. Mars as the only viable Option B for civilization.

Rocket Reusability

The only path to radically lowering the cost of access to space. The airline analogy: discarding a rocket after every flight is an economic absurdity.

Starship

A fully reusable two-stage architecture running on methane/LOX, with a target cost of ~$2 million per flight. The only rocket designed for colonizing Mars and achieving full multiplanetary capability.

The Light of Consciousness

Consciousness is extraordinarily rare in the universe and must not be allowed to go dark on a single planet. The meta-thesis tying together SpaceX, xAI, and Neuralink.

AI

Artificial Intelligence

AI as simultaneously the greatest existential threat and a tool for expanding consciousness. OpenAI, xAI/Grok, and Neuralink as responses to the stakes.

AI as an existential threat

Summoning the demon — AI may pose a greater threat than nuclear weapons. The rationale behind OpenAI (2015), proactive regulation, and the pause letter (2023).

Human-AI synthesis (Neuralink)

A third layer of the brain — digital superintelligence coexisting with the cortex. Without a brain-machine interface, humans are reduced to the role of a house cat.

Optimus — humanoid robot

A humanoid robot as the natural extension of Tesla's AI stack. Physical labor will become a choice, not a necessity. Potential two orders of magnitude higher than cars.

Sustainable abundance

Robotics + AI + renewable energy = end of material poverty. A quasi-infinite economy when labor is no longer the constraint.

„I tend to approach things from a physics framework. Physics teaches you to reason from first principles rather than by analogy. So I said, okay, let's look at the first principles. What is a rocket made of? Aerospace-grade aluminum alloys, plus some titanium, copper, and carbon fiber. Then I asked, what is the value of those materials on the commodity market? It turned out that the materials cost of a rocket was around two percent of the typical price.”
